My Hetic Fashion Week : Fashion Mavericks Part II

WARNING : Part II of the Fashion Mavericks, long post ahead (again)....

The last day of the Fashion Mavericks seemed to be even more exciting than the first day. I was excited, because my favorite designer from the event, (Susana Bettencourt) was the first designer to show her latest collection. Also the press came out in full swing; Vogue.com, Vogue US, ASOS, Harpers Bazaar, the BBC, and much more came, to check out these talented independent designers. The atmosphere also seemed much more calmer, and lively!

Press waiting for the show to start

Susana Bettencourt kicked off the last day with her A/W 2011 collection. I was able to speak to her the day before; she was so kind, and took me through the inspiration behind her line. Susana's collection is inspired by traditional African tribes, whose mourning traditions are marked by joyful rituals. Susana's collection is an interesting mix of intricate knitwear, and beautiful bronze age inspired jewellery.

My Verdict : I adore Susana's collection, it's unique, and takes knitwear to the next level. Her jewellery is simple, yet timeless. Definitely one of my favorite designers of the Fashion Mavericks, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

The next show was Obscure Couture, the ultimate duo Lyndsay Pagan and Jennifer Coyle showcased their eclectic debut 'Flesh & Bone' A/W 2011 collection. The inspiration behind their collection is the :

"exuberance and indulgence of the Victorian period with highlights of punk and rock rebellion."

Their collection is edgy, bold, and definitely not for the faint hearted. It's a interesting and amusing take on the prudish Victorian era, which produces eye-catching fashion.

My Verdict : Love it or hate it, but these girls know how to make a statement! Not to mention their dedication to creating this collection, they've worked against some challenging conditions, in order to pull this off; I can't help but admire them!

The next show was Sarahi House of Fashion; the collection is an affordable and fashionable that is designed to fit the "tall woman's body type", whilst also catering to the average height and petite women. The line also includes the popular custom designed signature jeans that accentuates every woman's unique figure.

My Verdict : I love the elegance and femininity of this line, the grey dress was my favorite piece of the whole collection. Perfect for the professional woman, who still wants to be elegant and fashionable at the same time.

The last show to close the Fashion Mavericks, was Fabryan (fa-bri-an), which launched in September 2010. Designer Samantha-Jane's collection is a composition of urban glamour, with deluxe silk fabrics, edgy leather bindings, along with extra detail to ruffles, ruching, and the gathering of material.

My Verdict : I loved the diverse textures and materials, along with the different hues of purple that contrasted with the black palette. Fabryan, is definitely another designer to look out for!

Throughout the two days of the Fashion Mavericks, there was exhibitions showcasing other designers collections, and one designer in particular caught my attention. Hayley Kruger is a jewellery and accessories designer, who does incredible things with her signature material; suede. She showcased her A/W 2011 collection, which is inspired by strong female icons, such as :
  • Joan of Arch
  • Cleopatra
  • Barbaella

All of her jewellery is handmade in house in her London studio, with careful attention to detail, which I admire the most. She uses a combination of materials that vary from, silk to cotton cords. Along with semi-precious gems, sterling silver and gold. However her the main material she uses, is suede. Her pieces are sold on ASOS marketplace, so if you're interested, go check it out!

The Fashion Mavericks, was a great success, and I'm so glad that I was able to attend. All the designers did a wonderful job, with their collections and exhibitions! I can't wait for next season, to see even more great designers and their creations!
